At a time when perhaps the best thing we can do is not to build anything new at all, I am still happy to share that this project for the @YderZonen is now becoming a reality. 

The purpose of the building is to teach children and young people about consumption, sustainability and the cycle of natural resources. That's why I'm really proud to be part of constructing a hopefully worthy building, that can communicate and emphasize the importance of taking responsibility for our planet.  

The goal is not just to build a new educational building. In addition to housing an auditorium and an exhibition hall, the building must have a presence that emphasizes the importance of the content it conveys.   The aim is to create an earthy solemnity that supports the need to take care of our resources while showing that buildings in wood and straw are not limited to being small old houses at the Open Air Museum. Choosing healthy and resource-saving building materials does not prevent us from building in a contemporary and scalable way.  
YderZonen is surrounded by vast expanses of man-made nature and large industrial facilities. The new addition to the communication center is large enough to stand next to the large silos, but in its materiality it has grown up from the landscape.  

It's a project we've been working on for a long time and which has finally landed in a good place thanks to some really talented engineers at Søren Jensen Ingeniører and a fantastic client who has dared to go all the way and accept all the challenges posed by the project's design and choice of materials.   It's one of the wildest projects I've worked on and it may end up with a small Danish record as Denmark's highest thatched roof 😉 The project will go out to tender this month and inquiries should be sent to Niels Damgaard at AffaldPlus.

We had a ‘knowledge sharing day’ at @andelsgaarde.dk last week.
Thanks to everyone who came, it was a great day!

It was great that both important and critical parties turned up, so it wasn't just "pineapple in its own juice". And on a Thursday morning.

Thanks for the tips and advice! And thank you to those who have more experience for conveying it in a nice and constructive way when you're a beginner.
After all, this is the studio's first real house.

It was also the first time I saw the finished thatched roof and I'm so happy with the result, even though it's a Funen eaves on a Zealand house and a ridge that has nothing to do with anything, it's exactly as we wanted it.

‘I'm pleased that we were able to focus on thatched roofs without fibreglass as fire protection and with wood fibre insulation underneath, which is one of the things we've really struggled with when it's not a pre-accepted solution like mineral wool.
It makes it even more important that both DBI and the Thatching Guild were represented and took us seriously, I think.

We also discussed the screw foundations from @fremtidensfundament , which Søren Jensen Ingeniører has challenged with requirements for loads from the free-standing rafters.

Huge kudos to the @andersmainz_byg - who, in a house made of wood with wood on top and insulated with wood - of course just make wooden wedges from offcuts instead of plastic wedges, even though it would have been easier. And just generally having such a good sense of where this house is going...<3

It's just a house.
As they have existed in Denmark for thousands of years, but I'm really proud of what we've achieved in terms of making something that strives to just be that, and just be that as well as possible.

The craftsmanship, the exposed timber framing, CNC and robotic prefabrication and perhaps most importantly, an attitude towards biogenic materials, by completely avoiding concrete foundations, fibreglass fire barriers, plastic vapour membranes, plaster and mineral wool.
Really just wood, straw and steel for now.

Right now, the thatched roof is being laid and the home for the tenant couple Nanna and Christopher can be built in dry weather under the large roof.
The site where the large farmhouse is being rebuilt smells of wood and straw.
It is reminiscent of something traditional and anchored, even though the skeleton of the house is cut by robots from recycled wood from the wind turbine industry and the rafters are prefabricated by LVL with CNC templates and anchored with laser-cut steel feet on screw foundations.

It's been a struggle to get here and we're not there yet.
We've had to challenge regulations, fire classification and deviations from pre-accepted solutions, even though it seems so traditional and straightforward.
We plan to tell a story about the journey through requirements and regulations when you want to build as sustainable and biogenic as possible, and how difficult it becomes when you don't just “as usual”.

This is how it looked at @lerbjerggaard.andelsgaarde yesterday. And a fine wreath was placed on top by @andersmainz_byg according to danish tradition.

It’s so satisfying to finally see the building rise and reveal whether the considerations in relation to views and juxtaposition work as intended.

Lerbjerggård was originally one of the larger farms in Melby, with a beautiful and large main house, right next to the main street and the entrance to the town.
It was important to us that the new main building had potential for the future development of the farm and Andelsgaarde, so it has been given a size that matches the old main house and as the farm’s third wing restores the beautiful courtyard.
Although the dwelling has been reduced under the roof and has provided space for activities for the cooporative farm.

The studio is officially up and running again now that my maternity leave is over. And what a start to working life. In Melby, at @lerbjerggaard.andelsgaarde , where we have designed a new main house, there is a topping-out ceremony tomorrow. It’s a new house for @andelsgaarde.dk and, not least, for @nannathomsn and @christopher.fischlein , who will finally be able to move properly into the farm soon. It’s been a long time coming, partly due to all kinds of external factors, but also because we’ve chosen to take on every struggle and challenge when rules and textbooks have prevented us from building as sustainably as possible. And we intend to follow up and report on that later.  The rafters system are a further development of the rafters we designed and used for the greenhouse on the same farm.  The rafters were produced at @spaanbrogaard.andelsgaarde on Funen by @havntos and @andreas_dalland , using CNC milled templates from @bymarkant . #KT Stålindustri made the customised steel feet that connect the rafters to the large screws from @fremtidensfundament . #Søren Jensen Ingeniører has been responsible for statics, fire and indoor climate, and @andersmainz_byg now has the contract to erect the rafters and build the house itself.  Looking forward to follow the build and tell about it.

We are very honored!

@dreyersfond have decided to support the studios investigative work with transformation and new vernacular typologies for @andelsgaarde.dk
It means a lot and allows us to get further with our ambitions on making the best possible projects for the farms that are already in development and hopefully create examples for future use.

Dew on the newly finished 50m2 Droplet.

The new and larger Droplet is up at the psychiatric hospital in Odense.
I’m very pleased with the result, the larger interior and the elliptical floor plan that makes it change appearance as you move around it.

I’m hoping it will bring a lot of plants and joy into the life of the patients and the caretakers at the hospital.

Great work @bymarkant who produced and erected it.

Besides the greenhouse, we build the small thatched house in the background last year from reclaimed timber from the former pigs stable, that was taken down where the greenhouse is now located.
@bakkenotten and @andreas_dalland produced the reclaimed timber framing as prefab at @sif.andreas.andelsgaarde

Design planning of the wooden homes for @andelsgaarde.dk

It’s more difficult to solve all parts of a build with biogenic materials, sure.
But it’s so satisfying to se the planning of the houses come together using screw foundations, wooden load bearing structures, wooden facades, clay and wooden claddings, paperwool insulation and thatched roofs.
Getting very close to a fully bio based and degradable house.

The necessary steps to be able turn the sunny and blue sky renders into reality.

Two of our most important projects to date are nearing start of construction.
And we are very excited to see the two homes at @lerbjerggaard.andelsgaarde and @sif.andreas.andelsgaarde take shape in the coming months.
They are the first homes to come from our studio and for us that’s a very big deal.

In the summer of ‘21 we did our first 100m2 self supporting dome at @ucl.dk in Odense.
It was a milestone in what we are able to achieve in the simple greenhouse domes that are now at 120m2
